Having been a member of DirectMatches for nearly 3 years now, I have seen some pretty wild things go on there. Yes, the place is overrun with "amateurs" who don't have much of an idea of what they're doing or why they're doing it.
But I would like to say that just like any other online social network, you can find serious professionals there if you look hard enough in the right places.
While the forums at DM are largely unmoderated and really not much more than a second classified ads venue, I do moderate a forum entitled "Networking - No Ads Please" and it is perhaps one of the best-kept "secrets hidden in plain sight."
While many of the members of DM complain about the "spam" from other members, I take a slightly different view - that these people need guidance and training in developing a proper business mindset, and I generally try to steer them in that direction in my replies.
As you say in your post, there are benefits to be derived there, but if people don't understand how to properly engage in networking they will find DM just as frustrating - if not more so than any other network.
